Who’s Listening to the Outdoor Access Message?
The SCAN spring conference was held on Friday 9th May in the Birnam Institute, by Dunkeld. The keynote speaker was Robin Harper MSP; all presentations sought to answer the questions: How can the relevant authorities, NGOs and member organisations come together to promote accurate information and education that leads to a better understanding, and a co-operative approach to responsible outdoor access.

The Best Laid Plans …? Planning, Development and Upholding Access Rights
The SCAN spring conference was held on Friday 12 May 2006 in the Birnam Institute (by Dunkeld). The day was chaired by Bob Reid, convenor of the National Access Forum, and a variety of presentations demonstrated that planning & development is a hot issue in outdoor access, for which there still seem to be more problems than solutions. SCAN Annual General Meeting – 12 May 2006
The SCAN AGM was also held on the 12th of May and was attended by 26 SCAN members. The AGM discussed the possibility of the establishment of a professional institution for Outdoor Access professionals in Scotland, and it was agreed that such an institution could bring benefits to the profession. The AGM agreed that in the coming year SCAN will spend some time researching the options, although it was noted that it would not necessarily mean a transformation of SCAN, as the open membership structure of SCAN provides valuable networking opportunities. Committee elections were also held. Linda Mathieson from Aberdeenshire Council stood down from the committee. Bridget Jones resigned as Secretary, but she will continue as a committee member, sharing a position with Doug Stewart, also from Loch Lomond & Trossachs National Park. Philip Glennie (South Lanarkshire Council) stays on as Convenor, Philip Waite (Highland Council) remains as Vice-Convenor and Alison Irvine (Fife Council) continues as Treasurer. Helen Todd (Ramblers Scotland) is the new Secretary. Jane Pritchard (Perth & Kinross Council) and Mike Dales (Scottish Canoe Association) stayed on as committee members and were joined by new members Angus Duncan (Central Scotland Forest Trust) and Alastair Fullwood (Aberdeenshire Council). Diana Holt was introduced as the new Development Officer with Paths for All Partnership, and she will in the future represent PFA on the SCAN Committee.
