First Minister to open new ”Fishwives Path”

The historic Fishwives Path from Buckie to Keith has been reinvigorated as a result of a collaboration between the Buckie Regeneration group and the Keith & Strathisla Regeneration Partnership. It has been newly signposted with the route markers all carrying the logo of the fishwife on a yellow disc.

There is an official opening of the walk by Alex Salmond MSP, First Minister of Scotland on Tuesday 9th July. There will be:

  • Demonstrations of traditional skills : knitting ganzies, smoking fish, net mending.
  • Cookery demonstrations using traditional and local foods: Cullen Skink, kippers, skirlie and oatcakes
  • Original creels, filled to the weight (40lb) of fish that the women would carry.
  • Certificates for the people that walk the path on the day of the opening.

Look out for the poster for the walk, along with an excellent new leaflet describing the route.

The Buckie Fishwives Path has also been selected as Scotways Heritage Paths ”Path Of The Month” for July 2013 and its webpage is now carrying the news story http://www.heritagepaths.co.uk/pathdetails.php?path=276, as well as additional historical detail about the route.
